Questionnaire #2: With Elijah Horwath, Mass Media Editor-in-Chief (2024-Current)

Emailed Question: Hello, my name is Carston Anderson and I am a graduate student in the English department. I am eagerly attempting to track down bulk copies of issues of both The Watermark, and Writ Large for a project I am working on.

I am hoping to find out if the Mass Media has copies of either they would be able to part with, or even allow me to photograph covers / publication dates of if not. I am in particular urgently trying to reconstruct a history of Writ Large's publications. I am willing to buy them, if required or optional. Even PDF copies not currently hosted on ScholarWorks would be amazing.

I am sincerely grateful for your time and assistance here, and hope you have a pleasant day.

Question #1 Answer:

Hey Carston,

Thank you for reaching out! I am unfortunately not aware of bulk copies of The Watermark or the Writ Large -- we do not keep any in our archive. You may have some luck with the Healey Library's digital archives. I would have no issues with you photographing or screenshotting covers and publication dates if you are able to find copies.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Followup email Question #2:

Hi Elijah, this is actually very important and helpful information for me, and I appreciate your time regardless. I did have one final question.

If you are the editor in chief of the mass media, can you tell me if you've ever heard of a publication called 'The Waterfront'? If so, can you tell me what you do know? If not, no worries.

I am super grateful for your time on this snowy Sunday, you've been super helpful.

Question #2 Answer:

Hey Carston,

Of course! I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help with physical copies.

The Waterfront is the successor to the Watermark/Writ Large. They are a literary magazine that publishes student writing and illustrations, and I think their first edition was in 2025. I believe their Editor in Chief is Solomon Spencer [Solomon’s personal email was included here], or if I'm mistaken he should at least be able to put you in contact with their EiC and answer any questions you might have.

Best of luck with your project!

Elijah

Email Question #3: how much communication and coordination is there between the waterfront and mass media?  Is the waterfront more of an independent student project / club?

Question #3 Answer:

The Mass Media and The Waterfront are both organized under the umbrella of Student Media. As a result, The Mass Media is technically in charge of overseeing The Waterfront, and we have some amount of budgetary control for the organization. However, in practice, they are basically an independent club and run themselves -- we don't have anything to do with their day-to-day operations.

Update! Now that we are back on campus, I did actually find some old copies of the Writ Large and the Watermark! I think it would be fine for you to borrow and scan them.
